Primary
The Montessori Hale o Keiki
primary school serves children ages 2.5 to 6 years of age.
The mixed-age classroom provides leadership opportunities for older
children and allows younger children to learn by observing more experienced students.
Lower Elementary
Six to nine year olds attend Hale o Keiki's lower elementary located at Trinity by-the-Sea
on Kulanihakoi.
Upper Elementary
Nine to twelve year olds attend the upper elementary on Kanakanui road.
Middle School
Montessori Hale O Keiki Middle School courses of study reflect
an integration of the Hawaii requirements of essential elements,
the newest research on the developmental needs of early adolescents,
the Montessori philosophy, the state of the art in current learning
theory, and the predictions of the skills needed for a productive
life in the twenty-first century. The curriculum and instruction
is designed as a two-year program in which students earn 16 units
of credits. The language, speech, physical education, outdoor education,
service learning, and fine arts are courses of continuous progress.
The science, social studies, geography, health and math are studied
by topics or concepts.
Students spend time both in the classroom and in "real-world"
environments with our marine science focus. Partnerships with both
the Hawiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary and
Prodiver/Ultra Dive Maui allow our students to do field work outside
of the classroom that studies current and on-going scientific topics
of interest.
The overall curriculum is based on the ideas of experiential learning,
multiple intelligences, independent topics of study, and mastery
learning.
